Airtable is a relational database with a spreadsheet-like interface — records (rows) that link to other records in other tables, with several ways to view the same data: grid, kanban, calendar, gallery. It's strongest anywhere a business needs structured, linked data with flexible filtering: inventory tracking, event or booking management, content calendars, or a CRM built from scratch. What it isn't built for is task workflow — assigning owners, due dates, subtasks and automations tied to work getting done, rather than data being recorded.

What is ClickUp actually built for?

ClickUp is a work-management platform first: tasks, subtasks, assignees, due dates, statuses, and Automations tied to work moving through stages. It also has database-like features — custom fields, relationships between tasks, table views — but they sit on top of a task-first structure, not a data-first one. For a small business whose actual problem is "who's doing what, by when, and what happens when it's done," that's the right shape.

Can you use ClickUp and Airtable together?

Yes, and some businesses genuinely should — Airtable holding structured reference data (a product catalogue, a client database) and ClickUp handling the task workflow that acts on it, connected through Zapier. The mistake is running both without a clear line between them; if the same information exists half in each, you'll end up maintaining two sources of truth instead of one. If you're considering this route, decide up front which tool owns which data before building anything.

Which should a UK small business actually choose?

If your day-to-day problem is tasks not getting done, deadlines slipping, or nobody knowing who owns what — that's ClickUp. Both support CSV import and export, so moving structured data between them is straightforward. The harder part is usually rebuilding views, automations and relationships, not the raw data itself.

Does ClickUp have the same flexible views as Airtable?
ClickUp offers table, list, board, calendar and Gantt views on the same task data, but it's still task-first underneath. Airtable's views sit on a genuinely relational database, which is why it handles complex linked data more comfortably.
