In short

A Filter is a step that only lets a Zap carry on when the data matches your rules. Filters don't use tasks, but they do need a paid plan.

What is a Zapier Filter?

A Filter is a step in a Zap that checks the data against your rules. If it matches, the Zap carries on. If it doesn't, the Zap stops quietly for that run.

Rules can be things like only UK leads, only deals over £5,000, or only when the email field isn't empty. You can combine several with and or or.

Filters don't use tasks, so a Zap that stops at a Filter costs nothing. They do need a paid plan, like multi-step Zaps.

How I use Filters with clients

A Filter goes straight after the trigger in most Zaps I build. It's the cheapest way to stop a Zap doing paid work it doesn't need to do.

I also use Filters to protect data, like stopping a Zap creating a record when a required field is empty. That one change prevents a lot of errors in Zap history.

A Filter that saves tasks

  1. Trigger New form entry 0 tasks
  2. Filter Only carry on if the budget field is over £5,000 0 tasks
  3. Action Create the deal in the CRM 1 task
  4. Action Notify the sales lead 1 task

Paid plan. Entries that don't match cost nothing.

Zapier Filter FAQs

Do Filters use tasks?

No. Filter steps never use tasks, whether they let the Zap carry on or stop it.

Can I use Filters on the Free plan?

No. Zapier lists Filters with Paths and Formatter as paid features, and Free only runs two-step Zaps anyway.

What's the difference between a Filter and Paths?

A Filter is a single yes or no: carry on or stop. Paths split the Zap into different routes, each with its own rules and actions.
