Zapier error handler, custom error handling or an error path
Zapier's error handler adds a backup route to a step, so if it fails the Zap does something useful, like alerting you, instead of just stopping. It needs a paid plan.
Add an error handler to a step and the Zap splits in two below it. The Success route carries on as normal. The Error route only runs if that step fails.
On the Error route you can add actions, including Paths, and use the app's error message in them, so an alert can say exactly what went wrong. You can add an error handler to any step except the trigger and a Paths step, with one per step.
Successful steps on the Error route use tasks like any other action. When an error handler runs, the failed step doesn't count towards the error rate Zapier uses to switch Zaps off. Error handlers are on Professional, Team and Enterprise.
The steps I protect are the ones that really matter, like creating the client record or sending the invoice. Their error route posts the error message to Slack or email, so someone knows the same day.
I pair that with a ClickUp button that fires a webhook to rerun the process. Once the cause is fixed, the client clicks the button and the job runs again, without needing me or a trip into Zap history.
Paid plan. The alert costs nothing unless something breaks.
Autoreplay retries a failed step automatically, up to 5 times over about 10 and a half hours. An error handler runs a different set of steps straight away. You can't have both on one Zap: once a Zap with an error handler is published, Zapier turns Autoreplay off for that Zap. So I use error handlers on the Zaps where I'd rather be told straight away, and leave Autoreplay on the rest.
Yes. Successful steps on the Error route use tasks like any other action. If nothing fails, they don't run and cost nothing.
No. You can add one to any step except the trigger and a Paths step, including steps inside a path.
I set these up and train your team, in your own ClickUp or Zapier account.
