a Zap trigger, a trigger event or a starting step
A trigger is the event that starts a Zap, like a new form entry or a deal changing stage. Every Zap has exactly one trigger, and triggers never use tasks.
A trigger is the event that starts a Zap. New enquiry on your website, new row in a sheet, task moved to Done. When it happens, the Zap runs.
There are two kinds. Instant triggers fire straight away, because the app sends Zapier a webhook the moment something happens. Polling triggers check the app on a schedule.
How often polling triggers check depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 minutes on Professional, and every minute on Team and Enterprise.
Every Zap has exactly one trigger, and triggers never use tasks, however often Zapier checks.
Picking the right trigger is half the job. A Zap that runs on every task update when it only needs to run when the status changes to Won will be noisy and expensive.
I go for instant triggers wherever the app has one, and the narrowest event that does the job. Then I add a Filter straight after, so the Zap only carries on when it really should.
The narrower the trigger, the fewer wasted runs.
No. Trigger steps never use tasks in Zapier, even when a polling trigger checks your app every minute.
It's probably a polling trigger, which only checks on a schedule. On Free that's every 15 minutes, on Professional every 2 minutes.
No. Every Zap has exactly one trigger. If two events need the same steps, build two small Zaps.
I set these up and train your team, in your own ClickUp or Zapier account.
